New technology is always interesting, so we decided to see how ChatGPT handled a few entry-level questions about popular ecommerce platform WooCommerce. As you’ll see, the bot can be a useful guide for WooCommerce beginners, but it’s not about to take over the world.

All up, this was a fair effort from ChatGPT, so long as you don’t mind American spelling. There’s nothing groundbreaking in the conversation, but we were only asking for the basics. ChatGPT covered our simple questions with no obvious errors or terrible bias. It’s fair to say that we got middle-of-the-road responses, without any great insights.

Since we weren’t out to fool the AI or produce a “gotcha” moment, we kept our questions straightforward. Even so, while ChatGPT mentioned hosting as a requirement for a new WooCommerce site we were surprised that it didn’t mention domains at all. Gaps and omissions like that would be hard to spot if you were new to the subject (in which case our quickstart guide to websites, hosting, domains, and almost everything else is definitely worth a read).

It's hard to know where ChatGPT gets its ideas from. Even when we directly asked, all the machine would tell us is that “I have been trained on a diverse set of sources”. So you'd definitely want to fact-check things like plug-in costs before you get started with WooCommerce (or any other platform). Where did ChatGPT get the upper figure of $200 from? We don't know.

We were surprised that it didn’t mention domains at all. Gaps like that would be hard to spot if you were new to the subject.

ChatGPT was a useful source for simple research like this. Has the game changed? It's definitely not a rival to our human writers or Support Team, but an introductory conversation like this one can be faster and more fun than Googling basic questions. When you want expert recommendations or personalised help though, nothing beats real conversations.
